It is with some confusion and a little embarrassment that I write this post, but I felt that you deserved an explanation after all of your support during the Bump's Real Nursery Contest. Many of you have contacted me to ask what happened to the contest results. Unfortunately the only account that I can give you involves a lot of speculation on my part, as I never received any explanation from the Bump or Sherwin Williams, but here goes:
We were flying high after "winning" the Bump's Real Nursery Contest. Humbled to have been chosen among so many amazing nurseries, we talked about how lucky we were and how blessed to have so much support from friends, family, and all of you as we checked out the Beaches website.
Later that day, a few friends emailed me to let me know that there were some pretty awful comments on the nursery's message board. I didn't often have time to check the comments section, as V keeps me pretty busy, but I was told these warranted a look. So off I went to check, and to be honest, I wish that I hadn't.
The messages were incredibly hateful accusing us of cheating, saying horrible things about Violet's nursery, and making attacks on our integrity. The commenter claimed that Violet's nursery looked like a, "dirty, old doctor's office" and said that she hoped Violet didn't grow up like her parents. Even worse, the comments were being made by a fellow contestant.
Apparently the commenter had taken issue with the phrasing on my blog, "You can vote once per computer per day." I can see where she was coming from, although I honestly had no grand cheating scheme in mind when I typed those words. If I had intended to cheat, I would definitely not have posted it on a public space on the internet. I was coming more from the idea that I voted on my computer each day and the Hubster voted on his, so we voted once per computer per day. I suppose if someone had a lab full of computers in their house, the "cheating" aspect of the phrasing would take on a lot more meaning, but it wasn't something that had crossed my mind.
I tried to respond in a respectful way - defending my integrity while not provoking the commenter. I believe in responding to hate by turning the other cheek, and I asked my supporters to refrain from commenting any further. This did give me some relief and I tried to enjoy our good fortune.
The next day, we woke to find that our nursery had been removed from the contest without explanation. The message boards had been removed as well:
A new winner had been chosen by Sherwin Williams - a beautiful nursery with a nautical theme. While this was my favorite of the other contestants, I found it odd as it had the second lowest number of views, and I assume as a result was not the second place nursery. In the rules Sherwin Williams did include a disclaimer that they could change any of the rules at any time, so it was their right to choose whichever nursery they pleased. We could only assume that they had agreed with the commenter and/or did not want our nursery to represent their company.
We may never know their reasoning, but we take comfort in the fact that we have a happy, healthy, beautiful baby girl and a cozy little nursery that we love. We know that our nursery is tiny, has hand-me-down furniture, and is not your traditional girl's nursery, so it may not have been what they were looking for. It was put together on a shoestring budget, but it was put together with a lot of love and hard work, and we are proud of it, contest or not.
It would have been exciting to go on our first resort vacation, but it didn't crush us to lose it. We are content with our lot and know that we are very blessed. My only regret is that I can't look back on the contest with anything but horrible feelings, and I dreaded giving an explanation to all of you. Now that I have given you what meager facts I have, I hope that I can put it out of my mind entirely. Thank you again for all of your support throughout the contest - you're the best!
~ Lauren

So sorry you had to go through all of that, Lauren.
ReplyDeleteI hate this for you all! I get so sick of companies bending to pressure from angry people (who were just jealous that you win it seems. I'm sure in the future good will come about because you chose to "turn the other cheek."
ReplyDeleteSo sorry this has happened - I definitely took your request to be friendly not cheating. I hope they contact you soon with confirmation. And your nursery was the cutest :)
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy! I'm so sorry for you all. Like you said, you have a beautiful healthy baby but it does still stink. I wish you had still won as your nursery is beautiful. Don't let the comments get you down. Check this out for a smile:
ReplyDeletehttp://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2010/08/mantra.html
Wow, that is really, really horrible. I'm so sorry you guys have had to go through all this. Unfortunately, a lot of people like to be bad losers and assume that there must have been some funny business going on in order for someone else to win. I voted for you guys everyday, and I know it must be disappointing to have had that taken away from you. But like you said, you have a gorgeous baby girl and are proud of her nursery and all the hard work paid off. That's all that matters in the end!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I guess I've been a little out of the loop! Talk about sore losers and very unsportsman! Anyhoo, I think regardless of what Sherwin Williams decided that you guys by far still had the best nursery and the fact that you completed it on a shoestring budget says SO MUCH MORE and that you decided not to do the so typical "pink for a girl" or "blue for a boy" was very creative! Regardless of the end result, my hat is off to you! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow. That is incredible. I can't believe they just arbitrarily changed the result like that. What was the point of having a vote?! I'm sorry that happened. You guys did a great job on her nursery; don't let it get you down!
ReplyDeleteUm, I'm disgusted and horrified on your behalf. While I didn't read the contest rules myself, I don't see in any way how you broke them according to what you've written here. And, furthermore, a company can design their site to control how many times people can vote and when. I cannot believe that you won, had the most votes, and suddenly unwon. I work in the not-for-profit sector and I cannot count the number of times some corporation has won a contest and when they didn't like the charities who garnered the most support, they just delete them from the system. I find that behaviour really insulting and unethical and not the kind of place where I do business anymore.
ReplyDeleteaww I'm so sorry to hear that! Violet's nursery was definitely the best, and it's a shame that people were so spiteful and vindictive.
ReplyDeleteKnow that you created a truly lovely space for your little girl, and that she can be proud to have you both as her parents!
I've been reading your blog since right before Violet was born. I've never commented before...but I felt this warranted it. I voted for your nursery many times over the span of the contest- I think it's absolutely beautiful! I have no kids yet but I saved pictures of it to use as inspiration for when that time arrives. Try not to let the negativity get your down. You did an absolutely beautiful job and deserved to win. (:
ReplyDeleteLauren - that really sucks. No explanation whatsoever?
ReplyDeleteOh Lauren *hugs* thats terrible. Don't worry though, like you said if anything it shows how many people love and support you! While they were all lovely nurseries I still like little V's the best, you did a great job! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so sad. I am sorry. You seem to be taking it better than I would
ReplyDeleteThat is so terrible! I imagine that the worst part of it would be the hurtful things people said about Violet, her nursery and you guys. I can't imagine the kind of person who would attack a baby with hateful words, and it's just so upsetting that the nature of hateful words is that you remember them while it's so easy to forget the loving ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that you guys had to go through that.
Just fyi, I think Violet's nursery is beautiful and calming and someday, when it's my turn, I'd love for my child to have a room like hers.
oh my goodness, it still amazes me how mean people can be. there were many lovely nursery's up for the prize (mine included! :) ) but I still believe yours was top notch. And if that is what a doctor's office looks like, sign me up! I will wait in that waiting room! :) I know it is hard, but just brush it off. You have a beautiful little girl that is the real prize! I never thought you were cheating. thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThats horrible!! I had Seamus' up there also, & I actually had someone make comments about what a horrible name he had and cursed in the post and made a comment about me to name him such a 'stupid' name. Nice for grown adults to pick on an infant! I simply informed them nicely that Seamus is Irish for James and nothing more.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe someone was so jealous. I am so sorry you guys!
ReplyDeleteWow MaryAnne - that's terrible! I think the next time they do that contest (if there is a next time) they should get rid of the message boards and 'ratings'. There were so many horrible comments on all of the nurseries, it's ridiculous that grown adults have to act like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the kind words everyone!
Agreed - that totally turned me off from the whole thing, I was so upset that someone would attack me and a (at the time) 2 month old. And these people are parents themselves, can't wait to see what they teach their kids...Scream unfair and get your way, call people names, and above all if you have nothing nice to say - say what you want and hurt their feelings.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, that is horrible! Secondly, the nursery you created for Violet is simply beautiful. It is creative, unique and demonstrates your keen sense of style.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry some people are just so hateful.
- Amber
Shame on Sherwin Williams and the Bump for announcing you as the winner and then revoking it because of a nasty post. Changing the rules at any time should not include after the conest is over. I'm sure that the other finalists were asking people to vote for their own nursery as well. We all wouldn't have voted if we hadn't thought Violet's was the best. It is beautiful (as is she!) I don't think any of us voters thought we were "cheating" in any way. I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you.
ReplyDeletePeople are unbelievable. Your nursery rocks. What a weird, lame experience....
ReplyDeleteMy nursery was in the contest too and fortunately I somehow avoided nasty comments, but mine wasn't nearly as popular as yours, which just goes to show you, people were writing nasty things out of jealousy. And honestly, if Sherwin Williams really only wanted people to vote once a day, they should have made you enter an e-mail address or something. I told everyone I knew to vote from all their computers and their smart phones too. Anyway, so sorry they took away your prize. I really love your nursery.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what nonsense. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that and I'm so glad and impressed with your attitude about the whole thing. Rest assured that you had an absolutely adorable and beach-trip-worthy nursery!
ReplyDeleteOh, Lauren, what a terrible experience! I can't believe such nasty people lurk out there on the interwebs. I guarantee it's nothing they would have said in real life! And I'm just as disappointed in the contest creators. We all think Violet's nursery is just perfect -- we wouldn't have voted for it otherwise. And I absolutely respect you for handling this with such grace.
ReplyDeleteThat is just awful what happened to you. I can't believe adults and companies would act that way! Shameful!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about this. I work in social media marketing, and I will be filing this episode in my brain as a case study on how NOT to handle a crisis. Sherwin Williams owes you an explanation. This doesn't help further their brand.
ReplyDeleteTrolls will be trolls. Keep rising above. Beautiful nursery!
P.S. Just shared your story with my husband, and he wants you to know we're boycotting the bump (not that we're ready to visit it yet anyway!).
ReplyDeletetooooooooootal BS, I am pissed for you. I voted for you multiple times, your nursery IS the best one in that contest. Serious jealousy was at play here, and I am sorry that they caved to the pressure.
ReplyDeletethe Bump truly is a freaky place, it attracts the loons, that's for sure.
Yours is the sweetest little nursery, perfect for a littte girl:) You've got such a great attitude towards the whole situation.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry. I happily voted for you every day - I loved your nursery and used it as a big inspiration for my daughter Katie's nursery. Ignore the negative people - I appreciate your blog and you won that contest in my eyes!
ReplyDeleteThe reason you got so many votes is because you have so many fans! Everyone who follows your blog (me included) voted once a day just like it says in the rules. I'm so sorry that the outcome of the contest turned out to be so disappointing, but we all know who the real winner was.
ReplyDeletethis is so awful... good on ya for taking the higher road and being so humble about the whole thing. you are taking it much better than i would be. i would be steaming!
ReplyDeleteso wrong, and totally unfair. shame on Sherwin Williams and on the horrible contestant who was making rude comments! I honestly thought your nursery was the best one of the lot.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear this. I was very happy to vote for your nursery, and did so because I loved it and told other people about it before I heard any talk of a competition. My vote was given with the utmost integrity. I feel put out that hateful comments have denied me the right to vote for you. The world can be a crazy place at times. The best we can do is keep on keeping on with our hearts open and heads held high. Peace to you both and darling Violet.
ReplyDeleteWow - never shopping at Sherwin Williams again. that is HORRIBLE!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually not into commenting (too lazy :| )but this nearly broke my heart. The WWW is such an anonymous place and makes it easy to judge others; however, I'm still shocked to find out people actually insulted you, your parenting skills and the way you designed your nursery (which is lovely , btw) with such profanities.
ReplyDeleteRegarding your "vote once a day"- comment: Your nursery as well as the current 'winner's' nursery were my favorites, and even if I voted many, many times for V's crib, I still voted for the other one (maybe 3-4 times?), simply to show my appreciation for their creativity and hard work as well! If anything, you helped to promote the contest!
Thank you for being so brave and sharing this awful experience!
In every "rating" contest I've participated in there were adults that became very nasty when they realized they were losing. They don't care if they are bashing a writing sample or a baby.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you had to go through something so awful...!
I'm sorry you had to go through that, it's definitely not fair. I started reading your blog just a couple of months ago when it was featured on design sponge for Violet's nursery. I fell in love with the crib and bedding...it was exactly what I was looking for...really the whole feel of your nursery. It has inspired many things for the nursery we are currently creating for our child. Just like everyone has been saying, you have a beautiful nursery, home, and baby.
ReplyDeletethat is just terrible! You have the most beautiful "dirty little doctor's office" I have ever seen! It is the complete inspiration for my own nursery!
ReplyDeleteWow. Honestly, what is wrong with people??? This is horrible. I love your nursery! It has personality and isn't the 'same-ol' that I see half the time. Some people need a serious kick in the butt.
ReplyDeleteWow, what can I say - I'm overwhelmed by all of your kind words! You're the best :)
ReplyDeleteYour nursery is the inspiration for mine, so it was definitely my favorite ;)
ReplyDeleteAll of your readers are saddened by the behavior of the other contestant and the companies involved, but know that we just adore your blog, your helpful posts on mommyhood, your design ideas and your love for your daughter. God Bless!
That is horrible. I am so sorry you had to go through all that - waht a shame, a disappointment (in the commenters and the companies) and a huge letdown. To be honest, I'm usually not a fan of baby nurseries when I'm looking for pretty pictures or inspiration - I never look at them (because we don't have a little one yet...). But when I saw Violet's breathtaking nursery, I was floored. Hers is the only nursery I've saved to my computer, and even taken inspiration from - I loved the blue/gray hue on the walls, the crisp whites and the bright pops of color so much that it became my inspiration for our master bedroom. We're still working on the "bright pops of color" part, but it's coming along. ;) So thank you for inspiring a fellow blogger with your daughters' beautiful nursery - it really is the most breathtaking nursery I've ever seen. So contest or not, you've created an incredible and beautiful area for you daughter to grow up in, built with love and precious memories. I'm glad that you can still see that after the contest. Keep your chin up.
ReplyDelete~Chelsea
Wow, that is so sad and terrible! They owe you an explanation! I, as probably everyone else who reads your blog, voted for your nursery every day because I really think it was the best one! To me, you're still the winner!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so angry! You won because you have a great sense of design and plenty of friends- online and not that supported you.
ReplyDeleteJust think of all the traffic you gave to thebump.com by blogging about them so often! I'm blogging this right now...
Aw, I'm sorry. Boo. I like your nursery.
ReplyDeleteKelly
It is a shame, but honestly, there are much worse problems, like disease and poverty. It is not "horrible." It is not "awful." It is corporate politics. Forget about it. Your family is healthy and happy. Continue to be thankful, and forgive them, and move on.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I completely agree. That's why I hoped the get it off my chest, put it in the past, and enjoy my very blessed life with my little family :)
ReplyDeleteWow,thats really pathetic. Your nursery is lovely. So lovely I asked you to design a "idea board" for our little girls nursery. You showed alot of grace by noy lowering yourself to their nastiness.
ReplyDeleteThis sucks. Where is The Bump and Sherwin Williams with their response? And why weren't they monitoring the comments and allowing such nasty things to be posted.
ReplyDeleteFrom a corporate perspective, I think they both handled this very poorly. The whole experience reflects very badly on them in my opinion.
congratulations for your tiny non traditional girl's nursery. It's sooo beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd I personally hate the typical pink-cake girl nurseries that are so used.
You've done an amazing work and your nursery is by far the best.
And voting once per computer is not cheating, oh my, are they serious?
So forget this awful stuff, go ahead with your blog and please give us the weekly eye candy, I love it! :D
Kasey @ Thrifty Little blog posted about this so I had to come and see, and I'm disgusted.
ReplyDeleteToo bad I can't Karate chop that commenter. Shame on them. And shame on SW. I would said this got me so upset I WILL NOT buy any of their paints...ever. Unfairness in this world should not be tolerated.
You won. You have have beautiful healthy girl and were blessed with an amazing decoration talent. I love to read your blog. You share your talents so selflessly. Anyone who knows you (or has followed your blog) would never believe you were attempting to be dishonest in the competition. Keep up the good work. And thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that yet again The Nest/Bump, etc is failing their users. It's unfortunate that a company such as them and Sherwin Williams would not only take away the prize after the contest is over, but not offer you any sort of explanation. That is what I think upsets me the most is that they just did it and never told you anything.
ReplyDeleteYou are being truly graceful in your post, but for the sake of good business I hope that they do provide you some explanation.
Sorry to hear what you've been put through. I felt you had the best nursery by a mile. Some horrible people can be nasty, but for the company to pay any attention to it is a disgrace.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious?? Violets nursery keeps popping up on so many different blogs! I just fell in love with it and it's charm and she is the luckiest little baby girl to have such an awesome room!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what happened. I entered that contest too simply for fun and because I thought our nursery was cute. After we got some nice comments the meanies came out and said some rotten things. I looked at others and saw they got them too. And what does a doctors office have to do with your pretty room? Stay away from that site. Lots of jealous parents.
ReplyDeleteYour nursery is beautiful and you are the real winner. Sorry this happened to you.
ReplyDeleteLame! I'm so sorry, you definitely deserved that trip. I understand your disappointment and think it sucks how everything went down. Give your baby girl a good big hug and know that her nursery is a huge inspiration to me!
ReplyDeleteWow I saw this through Kasey at Thrifty Little Blog and had to comment, its unfortunate theirs people like that out in the world I'm sure Karma will have the last word. As for Sherwin William I've never bought paint from their store nor do I wish too I Like my Glidden paint just think they should have handled this a little more professional. Sorry you had to go through this.
ReplyDeleteI came over from Thrifty Little Blog, and I'm so sorry this happened to you. Your nursery really is adorable. I just lost a lot of respect for that company.
ReplyDeleteAll the publicity that your nursery gave the Bump and Sherwin Williams and then for them to decide that you were not the winner after announcing you were, Give Me a Break. Then they turn around and award the grand prize to someone that THEY chose. And here I thought the winner was suppose to be chosen by popular vote????? Silly me.
ReplyDeleteIf SHERWIN WILLIAMS AND THE BUMP WANT TO SAVE FACE IN THIS FARCE, THEY SHOULD GIVE THE OTHER FINALISTS A $500 GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR PAINT.
This was very unfair for the top vote getters. All the so called adults that ruined this contest should be ashamed of themselves as well as SHERWIN WILLIAMS AND THE BUMP!!!!!
I am sure many blessings will be coming your way as a result of your humble and sportsmanlike handling of this unfortunate situation. Your nursery is beautiful and your daughter is beautiful, and she is lucky to have such fabulous and loving parents. Shame on anyone for making assumptions of your character based on something so trivial.
ReplyDeleteI don't know you but just read about your experience with no longer being the "winner". Sherwin Williams is really wrong to do that to you! I used to use Sherwin Williams in the past but I will no longer shop there!
